The Ivy family consists of 43 genera and over 1,450 species.These are climbing or creeping shrubs with aerial roots and simple whole and divided into 3-5 lobs,leathery, evergreen leaves.The flowers are regular, bisexual and gathered in umbrelliferous or cluster-like racemes.The calyx and petal consist of 5 yellow-green leaflets; the stamens are 5; the ovary is inferior or semi-inferior.The fruit is a spherical berry with violet–black or yellow coat.
It is said this family comes from South East Asia, tropical North and South America, yet members such as ivy (Hedera L.), ginseng (Panax L.) and angelica tree (Aralia L.), come from the temperate climates.
