The 6th Global Botanic Gardens Congress took place in Geneva, Switzerland during the last week of June. In it there participated nearly 500 botanic gardens from all over the world.
Plenary reports were delivered, and symposia, round tables and poster sessions were held. Bulgaria was represented by Dr Krasimir Kosev, director of the University Botanic Gardens and member of the European Botanic Gardens Consortium.
This year the Congress was a bit different from all the ones held until now, as it was associated with the two hundred years since the establishment of the Botanic Garden in Geneva, and the thirty years since the establishment of the Botanic Garden Conservation International (BGCI).
The Congress was opened by Dr Pierre-André Loizeau, Director of the Botanic Garden in Geneva. Greetings were made by Congress participants, and by the Secretary General Secretary of the Botanic Garden Conservation International (BGCI), Paul Smith.
During the Conference were addressed a number of issues in connection with the future of the global strategy in plant biodiversity conservation, strategic actions directed towards the management of botanic gardens, and the challenges the present day botanic gardens face. Last but not least, the topic of the social role of the botanic gardens was raised and discussed. A number of lecturers presented a general synopsis of the future of the botanic gardens in the Middle East, in Asia and in other continents.
Particular attention was paid to the education taking place in the botanic gardens. In several sessions and round tables special time was dedicated to the European
BIG PICNIC Project, in which the University Botanic Gardens also participate, and are connected with the provision of food security. This once again shows the important position the University Botanic Gardens have gained within the family of the other units around the World.
