University Botanical Gardens in Sofia, Varna, and Balchik Dressed in White

The first significant snowfall has transformed the University Botanical Gardens into a serene white landscape, revealing familiar spots in a whole new light. Beneath the snow, the cacti in Balchik create a striking contrast against the silent white surroundings, the coniferous groves in Varna appear even more expressive, and the garden in Sofia becomes the most enchanting spot in the capital.

Species like the blooming Erica carnea L. remind us that life in the gardens continues even during the coldest months. Snow is more than just a beautiful backdrop – it plays a crucial protective role for plants in winter. Thanks to the air pockets within each flake, the snow layer acts as a natural “blanket,” shielding the soil and roots from sudden temperature changes. When it melts, the moisture provides a valuable source of water that early-spring bloomers will benefit from in the coming season.

We invite visitors to stroll through the University Botanical Gardens in Sofia, Varna, and Balchik, and experience their winter beauty up close.
